In the heart of Africa, a land of unfathomable beauty and diversity, the call for peace resonates deeply. With every sunrise, the African Union stands committed to fostering unity and prosperity across the continent. But as we work towards peace, let's remember those often forgotten—the women with disabilities.
In times of conflict, it's the women with disabilities who bear the heaviest burden. Imagine navigating a war-torn land with impaired mobility, or trying to escape the cacophony of violence without the ability to see or year the danger approaching. They face compounded challenges, often invisible to the world around them.
We often overlook how conflict disproportionately affects these women. Their vulnerabilities intensify when safety nets unravel, and access to vital resources becomes scarce. Amidst turmoil, the voices and needs of these remarkable women are frequently drowned out.
But it doesn't have to be this way. The African Union recognizes the imperative of inclusive policies, catering to the unique needs of all people, including those with disabilities. Together, we can foster an continent where everyone—regardless of ability—has a seat at the table.
Let's strive for an Africa where peace means safety and dignity for all. Let's envision an Africa where the concerns of every individual, especially those too often neglected, are heard, considered, and acted upon. Together, let's pave the way to a future where every voice is acknowledged and where peace is truly inclusive.
