On 5 July 2023, at the premises of the Help the Society for the Upliftment of the Visually Impaired at Mile 4 Nkwen in Bamenda, eleven women with visual impairment trained in rope-weaving and kernel-oil production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is the most precisely specified piece of delivery in our records, and we would rather describe it plainly than dress it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eleven women. Two skills. Both can be done well without sight, both produce something that sells in a local market, and both need equipment a household can keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The purpose was financial autonomy. A blind woman in Cameroon is frequently assumed to be a dependent, and the assumption survives contact with evidence unless the evidence is close at hand. Income earned from work someone did with her own hands is close at hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We are not going to claim a transformation. We do not hold follow-up data on what each of the eleven earned afterwards, and we will not invent it. What we can say is that eleven women were trained, on a date, in a named place, in two named skills, and that the work continued. In June 2026 we recorded another account of skill and independence at the Braille centre, where handicrafts sit alongside Braille literacy for the same reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
