When people hear that CAMAB Women runs a Braille centre, they assume the reason is literacy. Literacy is what happens there. It is not why it was built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Blind women in Cameroon who continue their education in conventional centres have reported gender-based violence, including sexual harassment. Our own statement of purpose for the centre is explicit: to protect blind women from the violence they suffer in those centres, notably sexual harassment, while their education continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is a safeguarding argument, and it produces a different building. The centre is, in our own description, for women and by women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It also answers a problem we had recorded before we had a solution. At our general assembly in January 2024, the first difficulty CAMAB Women listed was the absence of a suitable hall in which to carry out our activities. The centre at Nkolbisson is the answer to an entry in our own minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It opened on 7 May 2026, after a long advocacy with the Yaounde VII Council. Sightsavers, the Council and MINAS were credited at the inauguration. We recorded our first Braille apprentice in April 2026, and in June a blind man began learning handicrafts there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
